Privacy policy
This policy explains what information The Gear Advisor collects when you use this website, and what we do with it.
What we collect
This site does not require an account and does not ask for personal information to read it. Our hosting provider processes technical data such as your IP address, browser type and the pages requested, in order to deliver the site and protect it from abuse. Our hosting provider's processing is described in its own privacy policy.
Cookies
If you visit from the European Economic Area, the United Kingdom or Switzerland (or we cannot tell where you are), nothing is stored on your device and nothing is sent to anyone until you choose in the cookie banner. Visitors from other countries see no banner, and the measurement below runs as if they had clicked Accept. When measurement runs, we store a random click number and, when you arrived from one of our Google ads, Google's click identifier and the ad campaign number in your browser's local storage (no expiry until you clear it or change your choice). We send them, together with your browser type and the page you read, to our measurement provider, and add them to the shop links on the page so the shop can report a purchase back to us and to Google Ads. Our measurement provider also receives three anonymous events: page viewed, shop button clicked, other outbound link clicked. If you click Reject, nothing is stored or sent; the shop links work exactly the same and the price you pay is not affected. You can change your choice at any time with "Cookie settings" at the bottom of every page. We set no analytics or advertising cookies of our own.
How long we keep it
Visit records held by our measurement provider (click number, browser type, page, the Google click identifier if you came from an ad, and the anonymous events) are kept for up to 12 months and then deleted. Hosting logs are kept by our hosting provider under its own retention rules. Emails you send us are kept as long as needed to answer you.
Legal basis and transfers
For visitors from the European Economic Area, the United Kingdom and Switzerland we only measure visits after you give consent in the cookie banner (consent is our legal basis); hosting logs are processed on the basis of our legitimate interest in running a secure website. The Gear Advisor is run from outside the European Union and the United Kingdom. Our hosting provider, our measurement provider and advertising platforms such as Google may process data outside the EU and UK under their own safeguards, such as the European Commission's standard contractual clauses.
Affiliate links
When you click a link to a retailer or brand, that site may record that you arrived from ours, in order to pay us a commission if you buy. From that point the retailer's own privacy policy applies.
If you write to us, we keep your message and address for as long as needed to answer you and keep a record of corrections. We do not add you to any mailing list.
Your rights
You can ask what information we hold about you, and ask for it to be corrected or deleted, by writing to support@thegearadvisor.com. You can also object to processing and withdraw your consent at any time with "Cookie settings" at the bottom of every page; withdrawing does not affect anything done before. If you think we have not handled your data properly, you can complain to a data protection authority: in the UK the Information Commissioner's Office (ico.org.uk), in the EU the authority of the country where you live.
Changes
We will post any changes to this policy on this page with a new date.
